Sway is a mindfulness app design to guide users through an interactive meditation process. The app tracks user movement and provides feedback that promises to help improve attention and focus.
The app prompts users to move their phone in a slow and continuous pattern of motion. As they do, the app gives the user positive reinforcement through soothing sounds and music and an undulating color pattern on the screen. The app uses the phone’s motion detection to identify movement and help the user bring attention to their body, thereby increases presence and mindfulness.
The app has a gamification aspect to it. As users engage with it and become more skilled at mindfulness, they advance through a series of six levels, marked by shifting color palettes. This gamification gives users something to strive for, and an even greater incentive to return to the app time and time again (if improved mindfulness wasn’t enough, that is). Each level also includes different movements or tasks, so using the app remains novel and engaging even as time goes on.
The design of the app is, in a word, stunning. Deep, brooding, bold colors define the experience of the app, and undulating patterns create a soothing, mesmerizing effect. Minimalist typography is overlaid on the colorful screens, giving users instructions and offering helpful feedback. The Sway app manages to do something entirely different and innovative in designing an interactive meditation experience that turns the source of much of our modern anxiety (our phones) into our salvation from it.
